How does News content update?[edit]

Greetings UnitedStatesian - at Portal:Catholicism/News how does the Template:Transclude selected current events know when to display Catholicism articles? Is it now automatic? Regards, JoeHebda (talk)

@JoeHebda: thanks for the question. That particular template instance automatically takes the six latest Portal:Current events entries that contain the strings "Catholic" (so "Catholics" and "Catholicism" would also be picked up), "Vatican", "Pope", or "Cardinal" (all of which are caps. sensitive), or goes back just one year if there are fewer than six over that time. Hopefully frees up your editing/maintenance time for other areas. Any other questions (or suggestions), let me know. UnitedStatesian (talk) 14:27, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
@UnitedStatesian: - Thanks for the answer. The automation is great. 1. How do those articles get archived at Portal:Catholicism/News/Archive? 2. How does the right side image get changed? 3. Previously it was suggested to have only 4 articles. 4. Is there any way to shorten the individual entries? Perhaps with at "Read more" link? Sorry for all the questions, but I thought to ask while fresh in my mind. JoeHebda (talk) 14:38, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
@JoeHebda: no worries, here's each answer. 1) There is not yet an automatic way to archive the articles, but I added commented instructions in the Edit Source view of Portal:Catholicism/News/Archive on how to subst the latest current events onto that page. 2) Changing the image would still be manual. 3) The number displayed is controlled by the |max= parameter; I just set that to 4. 4) The entries come over "as is" from the individual daily subpages of Portal:Current events, so you could edit those subpages to shorten one or more of the entries, but there is no way to have a "read more" link. UnitedStatesian (talk) 14:50, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
@UnitedStatesian: - Good answers. Hopefully last question - In case of "false hits" then, just delete entry? For example "Alexander Pope" or any person "Pope"; "St. Louis Cardinals",baseball. JoeHebda (talk) 18:10, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
@JoeHebda: Unfortunately the parameters would need to be edited, temporarily removing the one that created the false hit until it no longer appeared in the top 4. (this means editors need to keep an eye on the news section: it is not "set it and forget it"). I have modified the "Cardinal" parameter so that it only returns the singular and not the plural, which should reduce the likelihood. (don't think there's much risk of Alexander Pope being in the news these days.) 18:33, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Add US Open to ongoing section[edit]

The US Open is being held right now. Is it okay to add it to the ongoing section? 2600:1702:38D0:E70:6156:AA3B:FB51:D623 (talk) 11:13, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

@2600:1702:38D0:E70:6156:AA3B:FB51:D623: the place to raise this suggestion is Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates. UnitedStatesian (talk) 17:32, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Wikimedia Cloud links for current events[edit]

I'd like to suggest Wikimedia Cloud links as an option for certain current events items, when suitable. In particular, I'd like to suggest a supplementary link for Armistice Day commemorations worldwide next week for Wikispore Events, in addition to the BBC or other newssite links: i.e., (Wikispore).--Pharos (talk) 16:59, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

Northeast North America Wind Storm[edit]

There has been a "historical" wind and rain storm in northeast North America from October 31 to November 1/2. It left up to 100 mm of rain (in just a few hours) in some places, and winds up to 110 km/h have uprooted trees, broken branches, and torn down power lines. In Québec province alone, almost one million clients of power company Hydro-Québec lost power—more than at any time since the historical Ice Storm of 1998. Many had no power for 24 hours or more, and some 56,000 are still without power now (morning of November 4).

I see no mention of this in the Current events page. Can someone write something? (I'm currently at work and have no time.)

Thanks

Oh, so Lidia Guiler Tejada never existed, huh?[edit]

Why is the incoming President of Bolivia described as the first woman of that country, when from 1979-1980, a woman already served as acting President? This is in the November 10th box, btw.2607:FCC8:BD46:9500:60BF:D750:7A49:735B (talk) 06:57, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Acting President is different than President. 331dot (talk) 07:42, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
